Welcome to The Otterburn Tower Country House Hotel and Resturaunt, set in 32 acres of beautiful gardens and woodland. The Otterburn Tower is truly distinctive, a fortified Northumbrian country house, founded by a cousin of William the Conqueror in 1086. It attractively combines almost a thousand years of history with all the features required by today's discerning guest.
The hotel has 3 stars with a silver award.
The surrounding countryside is part of the Northumberland National Park with such breathtaking scenery that it is hard to believe it was once the scene of battles and conflict. The Otterburn Tower is in the valley of ‘Wild Redesdale’ featured in a Radio 4* Changing Places programme. It is a location rich in things to do, riding, walking, cycling, visiting gardens and castles, golf, fishing and watersports. Whether you want to relax or be active in this rural valley of ‘Wild Redesdale’ there is plenty to do.
The original building was founded in the 11th Century as a bastion to repel the marauding Scots. Robert Umfraville, a cousin of King William I, was charged with protecting Tynedale and Redesdale and keeping them ‘free from wolves and enemies’. In 1388 the Tower withstood its fiercest attack from the Scots following the bloody battle of Otterburn. A monument to the battle is within walking distance just north of the hotel. Its most famous owner was ‘Mad Jack Hall’, a well-known Jacobite who was executed at Tyburn for high treason. His initials are still carved above one of the original doors.
The historic beauty of the hotel is seen in every room, which have been individually refurbished to the standards of comfort and luxury expected by today’s visitors.
The grounds are set in formal terraced lawns where you are at liberty to enjoy your lunch in the summer or perhaps a pre dinner drink on the lawn. They make beautiful setting for a wedding, which the hotel is licensed to perform. Behind the hotel is woodland and open farmland with a choice of walks whether you want a stroll or a day exploring. Walk through the bluebell wood and down to the old boating lake – soon to be restored to its former glory. Walk the many footpaths behind the hotel through the neighbouring stud farm and see the views from the old Roman settlement. Walk the Pennine Way, hire bicycles, explore a Northumbrian livestock hill farm from the back of a quad bike (with full training of course!)
Sail on nearby Kielder Water, indulge in water sports, try flying birds of prey or just explore the beauty of Kielder Forest where there are many activities planned throughout the year, from festivals to a deer watch and children’s adventure days.
Whether you want to relax, go shopping or be active, explore the history, the hotel is an ideal centre point to do all these things. We are less than one hour's drive away from the Scottish Border towns, the Metro Centre (indoor shopping at its best!), Alnwick Castles and Gardens (where the famous ‘Harry Potter’ films are made), coast castles, sandy beaches and National Trust properties that include Wallington Hall and Cragside. Click here to view some of the activities available to you within a 50-mile radius of the hotel.
