Short Breaks and Christmas, Otterburn Tower Castle Hotel, Northumberland

Short Breaks at The Otterburn Tower Hotel

Fishing Title

GAMEFISHING

Fishing in this part of Northumberland is an amazing experience. Listen to the silence on Northumbrian hill farms - or just walk across to the Otterburn Tower’s own stretch of the River Rede. The Otterburn Tower has three and a half miles of fishing rights on the Rede, a tributary of the North Tyne, one of the best Salmon and Sea Trout rivers in England.

Fishing Image Most of the improvements in fishing comes from the local hatchery at Kielder. They rear over 700,000 young salmon every year. The majority are introduced into the Rede. The river North Tyne is only 15 minutes drive from the hotel with various beats available. While the River Rede provides excellent fishing, it also presents some interesting challenges for the angler. The width of the river dictates that the use of a single handed rod is the best method, using light tackle, of course all experienced anglers will recognise the need for keen observation and modify techniques to prevailing weather and river conditions. Fishing for wild brown trout can be the greatest challenge. There are also very good runs of Salmon and Sea Trout as the season progresses. Spring run Salmon may also be caught as may Sea Trout - but must be returned to the water before mid June. Tagged fish are also recorded.

Fly Casting Instruction

If the whole family would like to join in, then the hotel offers a fly casting instructor and river guide. Gary Proudlock, who can help the complete beginner with all tackle supplied, or the keen angler with his own rod to catch his first Rede salmon.

Our residents are welcome to fish the Rede on a complimentary basis, using their own fishing tackle with a permit, which can be obtained at the local post office.

For further details on availability and prices for fly fishing instruction please contact Gary on: Tel. 01670 772 664 or Mobile. 07833 613 594

STILL WATERFISHING

Sweethope Lough - 8 miles to the south is stocked with Rainbow and Brown Trout. Sweethope is ideal for boat or bank fly-fishing.

Fishing Image Fontburn Reservoir - has excellent fly and bait fishing.

Kielder Water, only 25 minutes drive away, there is about 600km of watercourses. The reservoir covers over 2700 acres and is surrounded by Europe's largest man-made forest. Tiny headwaters feed the main tributaries of the river North Tyne and the Rede. The larger tributaries stock native brown trout. Daily and weekly fishing permits for fly and worm fishing are available from the Kielder Castle Forest Park Centre. Tel. +44(0) 1434 250 209. There is plenty to do at Kielder for the rest of the family with childrens' activities, a swimming pool, boating, water sports and a birds of prey centre.

Caistron Trout Fishery is a mature, picturesque 50 acre lake located in the Coquet Valley near Rothbury and only 20minutes drive from the hotel. Call 07944178045 or 01434 609725 for more information.
